The iconic Palmer House, A Hilton Hotel first opened its doors on September 26, 1871, and since then has welcomed millions of guests, hosted legendary entertainers and celebrated countless birthdays, weddings and milestones. However, only 13 days after its grand opening, the Palmer House fell victim to the Great Chicago Fire. Determined to rebuild his hotel, Potter secured a $1.7 million loan–negotiated on his signature alone.
The first, known as The Palmer, was built as a wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha Honorѐ. It opened on September 26, 1871 but incredibly was destroyed by fire thirteen days later in the Great Chicago Fire. It was advertised as "The World's Only Fire Proof Hotel" and contained a grand lobby, ballrooms, elaborate parlors, bridal suites, cafes and restaurants.
